The name Yerba Santa, "holy weed," was given by the Spanish priests who learned of the medical value of the shrub from Native California tribes. It has been burned for centuries by native Americans to promote good health and well-being. Yerba Santa is used in herbal medicine as well as in extract form in many modern medicines for respiratory conditions including cough, cold, tuberculosis, asthma, and long-term swelling (inflammation) of the airways in the lungs (chronic bronchitis). It is also used for fever and dry mouth. Some people use it to relieve muscle spasms and to loosen phlegm.
How to Use
The tradition of smudging is a sacred practice. To begin, you’ll need your smudge stick, a lighter or matches, a fireproof container to catch ashes, and optionally, a feather or fan to help spread the smoke.
Light the end of your smudge stick until it catches fire, then gently blow out the flame so it smolders and produces smoke.
Once you’ve finished, extinguish the smudge stick by pressing it into the fireproof container until it stops smoking.
Be cautious with fire and keep a bowl of sand or water nearby to extinguish the smudge stick if needed. Remember to respect the tradition of smudging, as it is a sacred practice in many cultures.
