Incense Sticks, Cones, or Resins?

There are a wide array of incense types available, each with their own unique purposes. Stick incense is one of the most common, offering a long, consistent burn that gradually releases its fragrance into the air. Cone incense, with its concentrated form, tends to diffuse a richer, more intense aroma over a shorter period. Loose incense particles or resins can be used in charcoal burners, allowing the user to control the intensity and duration of the scent. We recommend trying each form for yourself, to see what your preference is.

What is Incense Resin?

Incense resin is a natural aromatic substance derived from the sap of trees, particularly those in the Burseraceae family, such as Boswellia (frankincense) and Commiphora (myrrh). The sap is harvested, dried, and often mixed with other aromatic materials like essential oils, dried flower petals, and wood chips.

Resin incense is known for its potent and long-lasting fragrance, making it popular for use in religious ceremonies, meditation, and aromatherapy. To use resin incense, you typically burn it on a charcoal disc in a heat-safe vessel, allowing the resin to melt and release its aromatic smoke.

How to Use Incense Resin?

Using incense resin can create a wonderfully aromatic experience. Are you new to resin? Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

1. Gather Your Supplies

  •  Incense resin of your choice.
  • Charcoal discs.
  • A heat-resistant incense burner or censer.
  • Tongs (for handling hot charcoal).
  • A lighter or matches.
  • Sand or ash (optional, to help stabilize the charcoal).

2. Prepare the Burner

Place a small amount of sand or ash in the bottom of your burner to help absorb heat and stabilize the charcoal.

3. Light the Charcoal

Hold the charcoal disc with tongs and light it with a lighter or match. It will start to spark and crackle. Allow it to heat up until it’s glowing red and covered with a layer of ash (this usually takes a few minutes).

4. Place the Charcoal in the Burner

Once the charcoal is ready, place it in the centre of your burner on top of the sand or ash.

5. Add the Resin

Using a small spoon or your fingers, place a small amount of incense resin on top of the hot charcoal. The resin will begin to melt and release its fragrant smoke.

Take time to centre yourself and enjoy the aromatic experience. You can add more resin as needed, but be careful not to overload the charcoal.

Important Safety Tips:
  • Always use your incense burner on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Never leave burning charcoal unattended.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in the room.

The History of Incense

Tracing its origins, incense has been a companion to humanity for thousands of years. Civilisations in ancient Egypt, India, China, and the Middle East revered the scented smoke. It was used to purify temples, honour deities, and even as a form of currency in certain cultures. Early records reveal detailed descriptions of how incense was intertwined with both daily life and spiritual ceremonies. From the burning of frankincense and myrrh during sacred rites, to its role in marking significant life events, incense has continually been used in important rituals.

How is Incense Made?

The process of making incense is a delicate art. Traditional methods often involve collecting natural resins, herbs, spices, and essential oils, which are then combined with binding agents to form a paste. This paste is carefully moulded into sticks, cones, or coils. The precise shape and design vary by cultural tradition and intended use. Even the method of ageing and curing the incense can influence its burn quality and aromatic profile. Today, many artisan producers strive to replicate age-old techniques, marrying modern quality controls with ancient wisdom to produce beautiful, long lasting scents.

What is Incense Used for?

People use incense for many reasons, often seeking to create spaces that are conducive to calm, contemplation, or connection. For some, the appeal of incense is simply in its scent.

For others, the practice is deeply symbolic, representing purification and the cleansing of both physical space and the mind. In many spiritual traditions, it is believed that the rising smoke embodies prayers and intentions. Incense can set the stage for meditation, yoga, or quiet reflection.

Is Incense Sustainable?

In an era when ethical consumption is increasingly crucial, incense has also become a focus of sustainable and considerate production practices. Many artisan makers deliberately source ingredients from local, organic farms and sustainable forests, ensuring that each component is harvested with respect for the environment and local communities. These ethical practices often extend into fair trade initiatives, where workers involved in the collection and preparation of raw materials are given rightful compensation and safe working conditions. The shift towards sustainability is not just about protecting nature, but also about maintaining the integrity of the long-standing traditions that incense represents—a bridge between the past and a mindful, responsible future.
